You don’t need to know everything before you start ❤️🧵
One of the lovely things about choosing lace and trims is that there isn’t always one perfect answer. Sometimes you know exactly what you need. Sometimes you only know that you want something soft, dramatic, delicate, colourful — or simply different.
Here’s a simple way to start narrowing things down.
1. Think about what you’re making
A finishing trim for a handmade garment needs something different from a bold costume detail or a delicate bridal piece. Start with the project, then think about how much attention you want the material to attract.
2. Look at the width
Width makes a huge difference. Narrow lace can add a subtle edge or finishing detail. Wider lace and statement trims can become a feature in their own right. Every Just Love Lace product title includes the width to make comparing pieces easier.
3. Choose the character
Do you want something classic and delicate? Try Broderie Anglaise. Looking for openwork texture and decorative detail? Explore Guipure Lace. Want movement and a fuller finish? Have a wander through Gathered & Frilled Lace.
4. Let the material do some of the thinking
This is our favourite bit. Sometimes the best choice is the one that makes you stop scrolling.
A colour catches your eye. A texture makes you curious. You can suddenly picture it on a dress, a costume, a craft project or something you hadn't even planned to make yet.
5. Don’t be afraid to ask
Jo has more than 35 years of hands-on experience working with beautiful materials. If you have an idea and you're not sure what might suit it, come in and say hello. You don't need the perfect technical vocabulary — “I've got this idea...” is a perfectly good place to start.
