When you've spent decades sewing, making and working with beautiful materials, you start seeing things a little differently.

A roll of lace isn't just a roll of lace. A trim isn't simply something to put around an edge. Colour, texture, weight and movement all start suggesting possibilities.

Start with the feeling of the project

Before getting lost in technical details, think about what you want your creation to feel like.

• Soft and romantic?
• Bold and dramatic?
• Playful and colourful?
• Delicate and detailed?

That feeling can help you narrow down the textures and materials worth exploring.

Look closely at texture

Texture changes everything. Fine lace can whisper. Guipure can make a statement. Gathered details can bring movement, while decorative trims can completely change the personality of something simple.

Don't be afraid to begin without the full answer

You don't always need every detail worked out before choosing a material. Sometimes the right piece helps the idea reveal itself.
